Super Mario piranha plants are a staple in the video game. When it came time to plan my son’s Super Mario birthday party, we wanted to make some as part of the decor. Love their vibrant colors and how eye catching they are. I’ll show you how to make these snappy creatures with just a few items. The fun thing about this project is your kids can join in!

I found these circular craft boxes at Dollar Tree, which were perfect for the base of the piranha plant. Dollar Tree also had some green paint that I needed for the base and stems of the plant

My kids painted the bases and I added a second coat

Two coats of green paint did the trick

Next my kids painted wooden skewers green, leaving about 1/2 an inch on either end unpainted. I let the stems dry on a cake pop stand

Once everything dried, I pushed the sharp side of the wooden skewer into the green plant base (Tip: try not to move the stems around too much once they are in the base, so they stay secure). Then, I cut out leaves from green construction paper and hot glued two leaves to each stem. When the hot glue dried, I bent the leaves back a little to give them a more realistic look

Using a large kitchen knife, I cut a V shape out of 3.75 inch and 5 inch styrofoam balls. Then, my kids and I painted them red. Once dried, I added a 1/2 inch white strip of foam paper with hot glue to either side of the piranha plant’s mouth (Tip: I only used hot glue on the ends of the white strip, so I could slide in the sharp white teeth under the white foam paper. Another option is gluing the teeth to the strip before gluing the strip down)

Then I slowly pushed the red ball down onto the top of the wooden skewer with the mouth facing up

Next, I cut out white triangles and small and large circles from construction paper and hot glued the circles onto the piranha plant’s head. Then, I slid the triangles under the flap of the foam strip

I used the piranha plants around the whole house. They were the perfect pop of color. Enjoy!
