My kids love all things Super Mario: activity books, coloring books, toy figures, video games, and even bandaids. Our favorite video game to play as a family is Mario Party Superstars mini games, so much fun. When it came time to choose a theme for my son’s fifth birthday party, a Super Mario birthday was a no-brainer. We turned the house into Mushroom Kingdom for his birthday, which called for a whole lot of DIY projects. The great thing is, my kids were able to help with many of the projects. Read on to take a tour of our Super Mario birthday party..
Outdoor Decorations

For the outdoor decor, I put some large Super Mario blocks that I made by the front door. I used these blocks throughout the whole house as decor

I made a sign on the door that resembles the beginning of Super Mario to make guests feel like they were entering the video game. I used this site for the ‘Super Kyrie World’ font and this site for the ‘1 and 2 player game’ font
Indoor Decorations

When guests entered Super Kyrie World, they walked over to this table and picked up a Super Mario character mask of choice

I ordered a Super Mario Power Up activity book that had punch out characters in it. My kids took the characters out of the book and I attached the characters to wooden skewers

I put two to three characters in cylinder vases filled with green styrofoam from Dollar Tree. I wrapped the vases with green streamer to give the look of warp pipes. These were used all over the house as decor

I made these clouds using white foam board from Dollar Tree and black card stock. I pushed two ball point needles at the top of each cloud, tied fishing wire to each needle, and hung them all around the house

I used one of the clouds to make a Kyrie is Five sign and made a Super Mario arrow sign that points the way to Bowser’s castle, Mushroom Kingdom, and Yoshi’s Island. Click this download button for the words on the sign

I hung these DIY Thwomps in the hallway and made piranha plants that I placed all over the house

I made this large 5 sign to hang on our mirror above the mantle and this happy birthday banner using mini Super Mario party favor blocks. I also used these mini blocks as decor on our front table, food table, and Mushroom Kingdom booth
Games
Mario’s Puzzle Punch

This was such a fun game! The kids took turns punching the yellow question blocks and unscrambling the letters they found inside to solve a puzzle that led them to a hidden prize. Click here for instructions on how to make this game

The game also doubled as super cool decor for our living room wall
Question Block Piñata

This DIY question block piñata was so much fun to make AND destroy. I filled it with lots of Super Mario goodies and the kids had a blast taking turns to break it open
Super Mario Levels

I made a Mushroom Kingdom booth for our DIY Super Mario levels game. This super cool game started at this booth

Guests read this sign and were led to Level 1 of the game

Each room in the house was turned into a different level of the video game. The winner of each level earned a chocolate coin. In the final level, guests had to defeat Bowser to save Princess Peach!
Food

For the appetizer table, I made mini food signs using this Super Mario 256 font. I put a matching sticker next to each food sign. I found the stickers in my son’s Super Mario Power Up activity book

Flower Power veggie tray

Super Salsa and chips!

Bowser’s Bean Dip – everyone’s favorite

The super dessert table

I made Princess Peach’s castle for my son’s birthday cake. Click here to see how I made this super cool castle cake

Piranha plants made with strawberries and grapes on wooden skewers, very refreshing

Rice Krispy Treat power stars

Lots of yummy goodies
