Outdoor Dinosaur Activities

You can’t go wrong with a dinosaur egg piñata and a dinosaur egg hunt. Both are super fun activities that my kids are crazy about. I made the piñata for this party. Read more to find out how I did it as well as how I incorporated the dinosaur egg hunt with the piñata.

I have to start this post with a disclaimer: This dinosaur egg piñata is a multi day project.  I had an urge to try making a piñata and it was super cool to make, but was a lot of work.  If you are stretched for time, just buy one lol. Now that we got that out of the way, here we go!

I bought a six pack of 36 inch clear balloons from Amazon. Once I inflated the balloon, I covered a flat bowl with clear wrap and foil and used that as the base.

Next, I gathered some multi-colored tissue paper and moving paper because that’s what I had on hand and just made sure I had enough of the white color I wanted for the top layer of the balloon (tip: moving paper is nice because it’s thicker, but tissue paper sticks easier to the balloon). I used a sponge type paint brush (pictured above with blue handle) which worked great.

For the paste, I did equal parts water and Elmer’s glue with a tablespoon of flour to thicken it up. I made the paste in a plastic container with a lid, so I could cover it up and reuse it the next day.

On day one I did about two to three layers of the tissue paper and let it dry overnight.

On day two I pasted the final layer of paper on the balloon and let it dry. Once dried, I cut ovals out of green tissue paper and pasted them around the whole egg.

I added a generous amount of black painters tape and covered it by pasting more moving paper on top.

Now for the super cool part, I got a knife and cut out a slit at the top large enough to fit the piñata goodies. Get ready to hear that balloon pop inside your dino egg, my kids and I got a kick out of it!

I filled it up with dinosaur stickers, tattoos, stamps, and finger puppets. As well as a dinosaur make-a-face sticker activity.

Lastly, I covered the slit at the top with more moving paper, took a deep breath, and patted myself on the back!!

There you have it, my DIY dinosaur piñata!

Dinosaur Egg Hunt

I wanted to tie in the dinosaur egg hunt with the dino egg piñata. So, I put a rolled up note inside the piñata explaining that T-Rex lost some dinosaur eggs and needed help finding them. It was a great segue from the piñata to the hunt.

I bought two packs of these dino dig eggs and hid them throughout the backyard the morning of the party.  I gave the kids burlap bags similar to these to fill with dino eggs.  After the hunt, I laid out a tarp they could sit on. They used hammers to break the eggs open.  Each egg has a different mini dinosaur hidden inside!  Each dinosaur box also comes with dinosaur info cards that show a picture of each dinosaur, along with its name and some fun facts about that dinosaur. Tip: If you’re pressed for time, save the egg breaking for another day.

Fun Idea: You can give the kids a big bowl filled with water, soap and brushes and have them clean their mini dinosaurs. My kids loved doing this the day after the party.
