No dinosaur party is complete without a volcano cake! I added a mister and red tea lights in the center of the cake to give it an erupting volcano feel. I made this cake for my son’s dinosaur themed birthday party. Here is a link to more details on the dinosaur party.

Without further adieu, instructions on how to make an erupting volcano cake!….

I made six layers of round chocolate cakes ranging from 8-12 inches and stacked them on top of each other with red frosting.

I used a 4 inch cylinder shaped glass vase, turned it upside down, and pushed it down the middle to cut out the center of the cake. I repeated this step for each layer and saved the middle portion of the cake for my mom, who prefers her cake frosting free! Once I removed the middle portion of the cake, I frosted each layer with the red frosting.

Once all the layers were done, I turned the vase right side up and placed it in the center of the cake.

This is what it looked like with the vase pushed all the way down.

I selected the red color on this multi-colored mister, filled it with water, and placed it inside the vase.

I taped a ribbon around the bottom of the mister with strong moving tape, so I could lift the mister up when needed to turn it on and off.

I surrounded the mister with red tea lights to give it a stronger punch of red.

Next, I covered the whole cake with chocolate frosting, moving the knife in a vertical direction.

I used a tube of red icing on the top and sides of the cake to look like overflowing lava. The tubed frosting made it easy to create thin red lines. I used a popsicle stick to flatten out the red frosting.
